# What do the numbers on the side of your glasses mean?

_Published 2026-10-25 by Opticnet, Hei Be'Iyar 58, Kikar HaMedina, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel._

Take your glasses off for a moment and look at the inside of the temple. There is a small row of numbers there. It is the frame's ID card, and in two minutes you will be able to read it, and even measure your own glasses on the screen.

## Three numbers, three questions
All the numbers are in millimetres. 47 is the width of one lens, not of the whole frame. 20 is the bridge, the part over the nose, the gap between the lenses. 145 is the temple length, from the hinge to the tip behind the ear, bend included.

## What is the little square for?
The square is not decoration and does not mean the lens is square. It says the size was taken one fixed way: imagine a rectangle around the lens and measure it. That way a round, cat-eye or square lens is measured the same way.

## Are two millimetres a lot?
From 47 to 49 each lens grows by two millimetres, both together by four. On the face you feel it. Still, there is no one rule: the bridge, the overall width and how the temples sit all change the feel. With a strong prescription, lens size and shape also affect its thickness.

## Same numbers, different feel
A metal frame with nose pads rests on the nose at points, an acetate frame with a fixed bridge rests along it. For a low nose bridge, some models are built differently around the nose.

## Measure on screen
This page has a tool: calibrate the screen with a bank card (85.6 mm wide), hold your glasses to the screen and get their estimated size, with frames in our stock in a close size.

## Three myths
The same size does not always fit the same. The bridge size is not your nose size. A thin lens is still affected by the frame size.
