# Contact lens fitting at Opticnet

A contact lens sits directly on the eye, so the prescription alone is not enough. The fitting starts with measuring the cornea and the tear film, and only then is a lens chosen.

## Why contact lenses need a fitting, not just a prescription
A spectacle prescription is measured at a certain distance from the eye. A contact lens sits on the eye itself, so its power is different, particularly in stronger prescriptions. Beyond that, every eye has its own corneal curvature and its own tear volume, and those decide whether a given lens is comfortable for eight hours or starts to sting after three.

A contact lens fitting includes precise measurement of the cornea and the tear film. It is a more detailed process than an ordinary spectacle check, so it is worth telling us in advance and we will set the time aside.

## Daily, bi-weekly or monthly
We fit every type of disposable lens. Dailies are the simplest and cleanest, with no cleaning and no storage, and suit anyone who wears lenses a few times a week or travels a lot. Bi-weekly and monthly lenses work out cheaper for everyday wear and call for a consistent cleaning and storage routine.

The choice is not made on price alone. It follows from how many hours a day you wear them, how dry your eyes are, and how well a regular lens routine fits your life. That is exactly what we talk about at the fitting.

## The lenses we work with
We work with Johnson & Johnson and with Alcon, the two largest makers in contact lenses. Which one you end up in follows from your prescription and the shape of your eye, not the other way round.

## Astigmatism and multifocal contact lenses
Astigmatism calls for a toric lens that holds its orientation on the eye instead of rotating. There are also multifocal contact lenses for anyone who now needs help reading as well. Both exist, and both need more careful measurement, so allow a little more time for the visit.

## Eye health, not only a number
A contact lens rests on living tissue, so the check looks at the health of the eye and not only at acuity. A thorough examination can pick up early signs of conditions such as glaucoma and cataract. If we see something that needs a doctor, we will say so and point you to the right address.

## Questions

### Do you fit contact lenses, not just glasses?

We do. A contact lens fitting includes precise measurement of the cornea and the tear film, which are the basis of a safe and comfortable fit. It is a more detailed process than an ordinary spectacle check, so tell us in advance and we will set the time aside.

### Can I use my glasses prescription to order contact lenses?

Not directly. A spectacle prescription is measured at a distance from the eye and a contact lens sits on it, so the power differs, especially in stronger prescriptions. A fitting also needs the corneal curvature and the lens diameter, which a spectacle prescription does not carry.
