Porsche Design is a design studio before it is an eyewear brand. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who designed the original 911, founded it in 1972 in Stuttgart and moved it to Zell am See in Austria in 1974. Eyewear began in 1978 with the P'8478, the aviator with a lens-change mechanism at the bridge that the brand describes as patented, which lets you swap a lens in seconds without tools. The signature material is titanium, and the production licence passed in 2023 to the Italian house De Rigo.
Porsche Design was started in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the man who designed the original Porsche 911. He believed that if something works well it should also look clean and honest, and that idea runs right through the eyewear.
The best known frame is the P'8478 aviator, introduced in 1978. What sets it apart is a mechanism at the bridge that lets you change the lenses in seconds without tools, which the brand describes as patented. Its oversized shield sunglasses became an icon when Yoko Ono made them her signature look.
The frames are ultralight titanium and built like a well made instrument, for people who love smart, precise design. The collection is produced today by the Italian house De Rigo, which took the licence in 2023.

The mechanism sits at the bridge. You release it by hand, take the lens out and put another one in, with no screwdriver and no tools. The lenses are coated polycarbonate on a base 6 curve and are sold as swappable sets. The brand describes the mechanism as patented. Worth saying that it is mechanical rather than magnetic, even though it is sometimes written up otherwise.

The model comes in several lens widths, from 60 to 69 mm, but the bridge is always 10 mm and the temple always 135 mm. In practice that means even the very large version keeps a narrow bridge, so the fit rests mainly on the nose pads. It is a frame that works well on a relatively low nose bridge with a wider face.
