Cutler and Gross was founded in 1969 in London by Graham Cutler and Tony Gross, two optometry students who opened a shop in Knightsbridge in 1971. What still sets the house apart is that it manufactures in-house: it owns a factory in the Cadore region of the Italian Dolomites, where the acetate is cut and polished. The identifying marks are a five-barrel hinge, metal pins in named patterns, sculpted temple tips and a gold-foil logo inside the temple.
Cutler and Gross was started in London in 1969 by two opticians, Graham Cutler and Tony Gross, who wanted to make eyewear that was fashion in its own right. From the start their frames were numbered instead of named, and to this day they are handmade in the brand's own workshop in the Italian Dolomites, a region with a long history of frame making.
The brand has dressed some wonderfully stylish faces, from David Hockney and Elton John to Grace Jones. Its best known screen moment is the film Kingsman: The Secret Service, where Cutler and Gross created the sharp square frames worn by Colin Firth and the other agents.
Each pair is built by hand from high grade Italian acetate, so it feels as good as it looks.
