MYKITA is the best selling brand in our boutique, and there is a mechanical reason for it. Its spiral hinge is made with no screws and no welded joints, and it stays visible as part of the design, so there is no screw to work loose over time. The frames are cut from thin stainless sheet and folded into three dimensions, a little like origami. All of it happens in one building in Berlin, the MYKITA HAUS in Kreuzberg, where design and production sit together. The brand was founded in 2003 by Moritz Krueger, and the name comes from Kita, German for a day care, the building where it all started.
Mykita began in Berlin in 2003, and it got its name from its first home, a former day care centre known in German as a Kita. From that small start it became one of the most respected modern eyewear brands in the world.
The frames are still handmade in Berlin, in the brand's own house, and they are known for clever engineering. A patented screwless hinge lets the frame flex and adjust without a single screw, and the ultralight MYLON models are 3D printed for a barely there feel. Mykita also works closely with the fashion house Maison Margiela on a series of standout collections.

It is a hinge developed in Berlin and built with no screws and no welding. Instead of a screw holding two parts together, the steel itself is folded into a spiral that acts as the hinge, and it stays visible as part of the design. In practice that means there is no screw to work loose in your pocket and no welded joint to fail, which is one reason these frames survive years of daily wear.

They are all stainless steel, and the difference is thickness and line. NO1 is the classic line with the exposed hinge and slightly more presence. LITE is made from finer steel and feels almost weightless on the face. LESSRIM is the rimless version, where an ultra-fine rim holds the lens. There is also a separate acetate line and a 3D printed MYLON line. The quickest way to understand it is to pick up one of each and feel the weight difference.

The bridge width is what decides it. Across the models we keep, the bridge runs from 17 to 24 mm, and that is a big difference on the face. MYKITA marks some models as narrow, for example ALLEN, NIKEN and BERTHOLD, meaning a fit for a narrower face. At the other end, BERTHOLD at a 24 mm bridge and NEVILLE at 22 mm give room to a wider bridge. On top of that the silicone pads and temple tips are adjustable and replaceable, so there is more room to correct things at the fitting.

By the manufacturer's instructions: microfibre cloth only, and a dedicated lens spray if needed. No soap, no solvents and no concentrated cleaning products, because they attack the coatings, the silicone and the plastic parts. Acetate frames do not like heat above forty degrees, so do not leave them in the car. Lay the glasses down with the lenses facing up and store them in the hard case.
