Celine eyewear has been produced since the start of 2018 by Thelios, the LVMH eyewear company, at the factory in Longarone in northern Italy. The two central families in the catalogue are Triomphe, whose clasp motif derives from the chain around the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and whose logo was introduced in 1973, and 3 Dots, identified by three small metal dots set into the temple beside the house name. The range splits between thick, present acetate and a much finer metal line.
Celine was founded in Paris in 1945 by Celine Vipiana, and over the decades it became a byword for quiet, grown up French style. Its sunglasses are known for saying a lot without a big logo.
Under Phoebe Philo the oversized acetate frames with three small metal dots on the temple became a modern classic, worn by women who wanted presence without shouting. One of the most talked about moments came in 2015, when the writer Joan Didion, then 80, appeared in a Celine campaign in a pair of large black sunglasses. Under Hedi Slimane the look grew sharper, built around the bold square Triomphe frames with their gold logo.
Celine eyewear is made in Italy by Thelios, the house's own eyewear maker.

Partly, and it is a distinction worth making before you give up on the brand. The thick acetate models really are large: we have pieces with 55 and 56 mm lenses and 150 mm temples. But the metal line is a completely different story, with round models at 49-20-140, genuinely compact. So if you liked the brand and were put off by the size, the metal line is the one to try.

It is the house's signature clasp motif, derived from the chain around the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The logo was introduced in 1973 and has returned to the front in recent years, and today it appears on frames in acetate and metal and in several sizes, including Maxi and Mini versions. Note that the family is called Triomphe rather than Arc de Triomphe, even though the Arc is where the motif comes from.
